September is one of the loveliest times to visit Skye.
The light turns golden, the evenings start to draw in, and the air has the first hint of autumn. Across much of Skye, September is still a busy month and restaurants, attractions and local businesses remain fully open.
That’s one of the things we love about being in south Skye. You can enjoy the best of the season — long days, good weather and everything still open — while staying somewhere that feels removed from the bustle of the island’s busiest spots.
So how do you choose between September and October? Here’s what each month has to offer.
September: Summer’s Softer Side
The days are still long and often surprisingly warm, the hills hold their colour, and there’s plenty of time for a slow walk down to the Eilean Iarmain Hotel before dusk. Having a great pub within walking distance is surprisingly rare on Skye, and one of the things our guests love most.
It’s still a popular time to visit the island, but staying in the south means you can enjoy a little more space and return to a peaceful retreat after a day exploring.
October: The Island Turns Golden
By October, Skye is in full autumn dress. The bracken burns copper across the hills, mornings arrive misty and still, and the weather reminds you who’s really in charge.
This is the season Skuyö was made for. After a day outdoors, there’s something particularly satisfying about coming back to the lodge, lighting the wood burner and watching the weather roll across the Sound of Sleat from the sofa.
It’s the sort of weather that makes you want to light the fire, pour a glass of wine and stay exactly where you are.
Darker Skies, Brighter Stars
As the nights draw in, the skies above the Sound of Sleat put on their own show. Autumn brings some of the clearest stargazing of the year and, if conditions are right, you may even catch the Northern Lights. Some of our guests have been lucky enough to watch them from the balcony.
The hot tub, a dram, and a sky full of stars. It’s hard to beat.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
Whichever month you choose, a little preparation goes a long way:
- Pack layers and waterproofs — autumn weather likes to keep you guessing.
- Book restaurants ahead, as it can still be busy in the most popular spots
- Bring binoculars — deer, seals, eagles and our local otters are regular visitors to this part of Skye.
- Stay for at least two or three nights if you can. It gives you time to slow down and really switch off.
