Romantic Accommodation on Skye: What Makes the Perfect Escape for Two?

There are plenty of reasons to choose the Isle of Skye for a romantic break.

The mountains. The sea. The winding roads that lead to places you hadn’t planned to visit. Long walks followed by very good local food. Dramatic weather that gives you an excellent excuse to stay in.

But where you stay matters too.

If you’re looking for romantic accommodation on Skye, the right place should be more than somewhere to sleep between days out. It should be somewhere you actually want to spend time.

What makes accommodation romantic?

Romance means different things to different people. For some, it’s champagne and dinner reservations. For others, it’s finally having a few uninterrupted days together with nobody asking what’s for tea or where their other shoe is.

For us, romantic accommodation is about privacy, comfort and time. We think a beautiful view helps, and so does a hot tub. But the real luxury is having nowhere else you need to be.

Look for somewhere genuinely designed for two

There’s a difference between staying in a large holiday cottage as a couple and staying somewhere that was created specifically for two people, but with plenty of space to spread out.

At Skuyö, there is one generous bedroom, on its own stylish mezzanine, complete with Juliette balcony for enjoying the view.

There’s one king-sized bed and no need to wonder why you’re paying for three spare bedrooms you’re never going to use.

The bathroom is as big as a bedroom and comes complete with stand-alone tub, rain shower, his and hers sinks…and another view.

Skuyö has been designed as a place for two people to slow down and spend time together, whether that means getting out and exploring Skye every day or barely leaving the house at all.

There’s space to cook, eat, read and relax together. There’s a wood burning stove to curl up next to and a dining table, just for two.

A private hot tub makes a very good case for staying in

We may be biased about this one, but we’re pretty sure there are few better ways to end a day on Skye than stepping into a hot tub while the air around you is distinctly Highland, especially when you’ve spent the day walking, or driving, or getting rained on.

Or maybe all three.

Skuyö’s hot tub sits outside on the private deck, with views of the landscape around you. In summer, you can sit outside late into the evening while there is still light in the sky. In autumn and winter, the experience changes completely. Cold air, hot water, dark skies and, if you’re lucky, more stars than you remembered existed.

Romantic doesn’t necessarily mean dressing up and going out. Sometimes it means not having to go anywhere at all.

Choose somewhere you’ll enjoy when the weather changes

At some point when you’re on Skye, the weather is going to have an opinion about your plans. That’s just part of being here, which is why we think your accommodation should be somewhere you’re very happy to return to.

At Skuyö, there’s a large flat screen tv by the wood-burning stove, a deep freestanding bath ready for when you want to soak for hours, with the music cranked up loud and a stylish bedroom designed for lounging about in when the weather’s not playing ball.

Make dinner together. Open a bottle of something good. Put the fire on. Get back into the hot tub for the third time today. Read. Nap. Or do absolutely nothing productive.

A romantic stay shouldn’t depend on blue skies. Let’s face it, on Skye, that would be taking quite a gamble.

Privacy matters

If you’re escaping for a few days together, the chances are you don’t particularly want to share the experience with a coach party, or hear the people in the room next door at all hours. Or take turns with strangers, using the hotel spa.

One of the things we love about self-catering accommodation for two is the freedom it gives you. Breakfast whenever you like. Dinner whenever you like. No check-in desk. No timetable. And best of all – just the two of you.

At Skuyö, you have your own place, your own private outdoor space and your own hot tub. No sharing required.

Complete isolation isn’t always romantic

There’s another side to this. Getting away from everything sounds wonderful until you fancy dinner and discover it involves a 40-minute drive (which is one of the reasons most tourists head for Portree).

Skuyö is in Isleornsay on the South coast of Skye. Our beautiful location gives you the feeling of being tucked away, without having to disappear completely from civilisation. You can spend the day exploring, come home and relax, or wander out for food and a drink rather than having to get back into the car. Its only 40 mins or so to the ‘famous’ parts of Skye but you also get to explore the side the locals love the best. The Sleat Peninsula is locally known as ‘The Garden of Skye.’

If you want that kind of balance, Skuyö’s location is really ideal. We can offer privacy when you want it but a little bit of life around you when you don’t. Beautiful scenery, yet a short drive to the epic mountains Skye is known for.

Find somewhere that feels like part of the trip

When people plan a trip to Skye, it’s easy to concentrate on the places everyone talks about including:

The Fairy Pools.

The Old Man of Storr.

The Cuillins.

Portree.

But some of the moments you remember most might happen back at the place you are staying, such as your first coffee of the day, looking out at the view. Coming home soaked after a walk, then sitting in the hot tub as the light disappears. A lazy breakfast that turns into lunch because neither of you is particularly interested in moving.

Good accommodation changes what you remember about a holiday. If a place is exceptional, you stop treating it as somewhere you leave in the morning and return to at night and it becomes part of the reason you want to go back one day…

Romantic accommodation on Skye isn’t just for anniversaries

Skye makes a great place to celebrate an anniversary, honeymoon, birthday or surprise weekend away, but we say you don’t need ‘an occasion.’

Sometimes reason enough is just realising that you haven’t spent enough time together recently and that what you really need is to plan a few days away together, to change your pace.

Romantic can mean walking somewhere new together, eating somewhere with good local produce, having space to think, sit and talk. Or sit and not talk, comfortable in the familiar space of an established relationship.

Looking for romantic accommodation on Skye?

If your idea of romance involves privacy, beautiful surroundings, a hot tub, a wood-burning stove and a house designed entirely around two people, we think Skuyö might suit your next romantic escape pretty well.

When we created this space, we imagined it as somewhere to feel calm, comfortable and connected, both to Skye and to each other. So when you visit, we encourage you to go out and explore the island, then come home to your own private space and shut the door until the next day.

The rest is entirely up to you.
